Mike Michaels and Patricia Johnson use the term "Designer Relationships," a phrase that aptly describes the new hookups.
"A decade ago, it was almost inconceivable that marriage equality would be the law in so many states and that a substantial majority of Americans would support it. It would also have been hard to imagine that Time Magazine would feature a transgender television star on its cover while calling the trans movement 'America's next civil rights frontier,'" explained Michaels and Johnson on their relationship website Alternet.org.
"Designer Relationships allow people to create and build their own relationships without constraint or limits. They can be exclusive, non-exclusive, serious, casual, or more - it's whatever each partner agrees upon. Clear and open communication is key, and flexibility and change is understood and non-judged.
"For people choosing to be strictly monogamous, the emphasis on communication and understanding may also be monogamy's salvation. After all, people change and evolve over time, assert Michaels and Johnson. Having the space to discuss any issue freely will strengthen a relationship - whether monogamous or not."

Not that a traditional married relationship is exactly DOA.
Marriage Rocks! is a grassroots movement founded by married couple Derrick and Davida Brown and supported by more than twenty thousand people around the world who seek to change the negative perceptions of marriage.
"At Marriage Rocks! we believe marriage is a sacred covenant entered into before and blessed by God. Marriage is the foundation of the family," stated Davida Brown, one of the creators of the movement. "But too often, it is portrayed negatively. The media will have you believe your marriage will fail, that monogamy isn't practical, that you can't pursue your dreams if you are married, or that you can't be married, committed and happy. We refuse to accept these proclamations as truths."
With national and international divorce statistics on the rise, the Browns hope to "spark a more optimistic view of marriage." They understand that no marriage is flawless, but wanted to add some positivity into the discussion, while offering support and encouragement for couples in both good times and bad. "We know that no marriage is perfect, and has its ups and downs. But does this mean you can�t have a happy, healthy, committed and thriving marriage? Absolutely not."
Marriage Rocks! is on course to becoming a global phenomenon. The Browns debuted a Facebook fan page on Valentine's Day 2014 to gauge interest. In just three short months, the page has acquired more than 20,000 likes from people all around the planet, in more than 45 countries and of all ages and backgrounds.
